These simple Windows steps can help restore a lost Wi-Fi connection without visiting a service centre.

Losing Wi-Fi during work, an online class or a meeting can be frustrating. In some cases, the network name disappears from the available list. In other cases, the laptop sees the network but cannot access the internet.

Microsoft’s technical guidance says many common Wi-Fi problems can be fixed with basic troubleshooting. Users can try several steps before seeking help from a technician or service provider.

First, check whether Wi-Fi is turned on. Click the network icon on the laptop’s taskbar and check the Wi-Fi setting. Also make sure Airplane mode is off. When Airplane mode is on, wireless connections are turned off.

If the network appears but the laptop cannot connect, try forgetting the network. In Windows, open Settings, then go to Network & Internet and Wi-Fi. Select Manage known networks and choose the affected network. Click Forget, then select the network again and enter the Wi-Fi password.

The next step is to check the router or modem. Connect a smartphone or another device to the same Wi-Fi network. If those devices also cannot access the internet, the issue may be with the router, modem or internet connection.

Microsoft recommends unplugging the router and modem from power and waiting at least 30 seconds. Reconnect the power cables and wait for the devices to restart. Then try connecting the laptop again.

If the Wi-Fi option is missing from Windows settings, check the network adapter. Search for Device Manager and open it. Select Network adapters and find the wireless network adapter. If it is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device.

If these steps do not solve the issue, Windows also offers a Network Reset option. On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. On Windows 10, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.

Network Reset should be used as a last resort. It removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and other network settings from the laptop. Users may need to enter their network details again after the reset.

If Wi-Fi still does not work, the laptop may need a network driver update. The problem could also involve the laptop’s internal hardware or the internet service provider.

Trying these steps can help identify whether the problem is with the laptop, the local network or the internet connection. If the issue continues after troubleshooting, users can then seek technical or ISP support.
